Questions from the Field: How to Manage Your LinkedIn Profile

Dear Ms. Jaggers,

I read an article you wrote last year on LinkedIn summaries, with interest.

A question: what advice do you have for those who have perhaps the resume of a job-hopper, many interests, and though they may appear to be on a particular track, are still thinking about what they want to do when they grow up–in their mid-30s? Not that this describes me or anything 🙂

For example, how much should resemble marketing copy vs. an open acknowledgment of the divergent paths you’re thinking about?

My response:

Dear J.:

What a great question! There’s less concern about having a varied resume as there used to be – Gen X and younger workers don’t stay in one place longer than the job fits. I think open acknowledgement is the right choice – and demonstrates that you have a variety of interests and abilities.

 

I think the days of worrying about short-term engagements (as long as there’s a variety of career commitments and reasonable explanations and a lack of FIRINGS) are over. The new conventional wisdom says if you’re not fulfilled, satisfied, and rewarded at work, MOVE ON. It’s better for the employer and the employee. I have yet to meet a person who regretted a job change.

Mourning the Loss of Google Reader: What now?!

Marijean JaggersI’ve been a long-time user and fan of Google Reader, so news of its demise is hard to take. I feel bad, too, having encouraged clients, students and workshop participants to use Google Reader for YEARS. I wonder how many of you, followers of this blog and any of my efforts to educate the public on using feed readers, monitoring content online, or efficiently reading blog content, have been using Google Reader as well?

For my own purposes, and for those of you who depend on me to navigate these waters, I’ve been doing a little research into what replacement to use.

Lifehacker published Five Best Google Reader Alternatives, but I’ve looked into this a little further.

Feedly is one option, but the masses flocking to it have already caused it to crash, making it less attractive as an option.

I have used one of the alternatives, Netvibes, in the past. I’ve decided to return to it because it has the cleanest interface and I can easily export my feeds from Google Reader and import them to Netvibes, and not miss a thing in transition.

WTF? Friday: Internet Privacy, Netflix Sharing and More!

On Charlottesville Right Now with Coy Barefoot, we talked about our changing relationship with privacy. A couple of recent developments inspired our discussion. One, the possible settlement agreement that Google may reach, in allegations that it,

gleaned “sensitive personal information,” including e-mail and text messages, passwords and Web-use history, from non-secured Wi-Fi networks,the Federal Communications Commission said last year.

We all love Street View, which the information was instrumental in building, but at what cost?

And this news from Netflix and Facebook: do you want your social network to know that your favorite movie is Hot Tub Time Machine? A new app allows users to share their movie viewing habits. Are you on board with that?

What Is Reputation Management, Anyway?

Public relations firms have begun to adopt a descriptor that I think more accurately describes what some of us do; reputation management. The term originated with the internet and Marijean Jaggerssearch engine results and has been used by companies promising to rid your company of all those nasty negative posts and comments that damage your brand’s reputation. As used here, and by Jaggers Communications, it is the practice of applying smart communications to tell the story of your business in a way that, yes, affects search results when one goes looking for information about your brand, but also the longer-term effect of educating, changing perceptions and establishing who you are, what you do, and what you do well.

I refer to my firm as a reputation management firm. I find that it’s far easier a concept for people to understand than public relations ever was. I remember comparing notes with others in public relations for years on the question, “does your family understand what it is that you do?” Our families often didn’t!

I think that lack of understanding has dissipated somewhat. I think there is more of a general, global understanding of social media and its impact; of the need for companies to have a communications strategy in place, and to be sharing the news of their business frequently and consistently.

WTF? Friday: How NOT to React to a Crisis

I enlisted the help of my friend Alex Gulotta executive directorof Legal Aid Justice Center to demonstrate exactly how an organization or individual DOES NOT WANT to react in the event of a communications crisis.



 

Rather, consider these three steps:

  1. Get out in front of it — if the writing’s on the wall, what can you do, proactively, to head any damage off at the pass?
  2. Plan reactionary statements for all possible scenarios.
  3. Develop the right messages about the situation that are CLEAR, SINCERE, and INFORMATIVE.
